DkIT accepting late applications for applied music degree programme

DkIT is inviting applications to its BA (Honours) in Applied Music at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT). All applications must be made via the Central Applications Office (www.cao.ie) by May 1st at 17.15PM.

This is the first year that DkIT is accepting late applications to its four-year honours degree Applied Music programme. Unlike many other third level music programmes offered nation-wide, the BA (Hons) in Applied Music at DkIT is extremely diverse, offering students a blend of musicology, music technology, composition, Irish traditional music, ethnomusicology and performance, and balances practical and theoretical approaches to learning.

A significant component of the programme is dedicated to performance and students will have the opportunity to participate in a range of music ensembles including music theatre/opera group, choir, jazz ensemble, rock/pop and Irish traditional groups. Previous graduates have followed successful careers in music performance and other diverse pathways such as music teaching, music technology & music software development, arts administrations and broadcast-related activities. This honours degree programme meets the requirements of the Teaching Council for second-level school teaching.

Dr Adele Commins, Head of Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music said: “We would encourage anyone with a desire to pursue a rewarding career in music to submit their application before the May 1st deadline. Applied Music is a highly practical programme which exposes students to  a diverse range of modules that have  been designed to equip students with the job-ready skills necessary to pursue a successful career in the creative industries. Housed in the creative hub of the Institute students can collaborate on exciting projects with film, production, computing and games students. ”

Niamh Jackson, fourth year applied music student, from Ashbourne, also commented: “I love the practical element of the course. We have so many opportunities to perform and fine-tune our skills and understanding of a wide variety of musical genres. Working alongside students and staff from different musical backgrounds has opened up so many new opportunities for me. I would definitely recommend the course to anyone who has a passion for music.”

Applications to the BA (Hons) in Applied Music must be submitted to CAO (www.cao.ie) before May 1st at 5.15pm.
