Katherine Hunka and Dermot Dunne.

Chamber orchestra goes to the movies

The Irish Chamber Orchestra is renowned for its virtuosity, its intimacy, programme diversity and outstanding musicianship. The orchestra embarks on its latest country-wide tour from the 18th-22nd May as Katherine Hunka directs The Magic of the Movies, showcasing some of Hollywood’s best film music, from classic movie scores to today’s most popular soundtracks. A selection of these colourful works feature the accordion, played with acrobatic panache by Dermot Dunne.

Bernard Hermann opted for a range of tonality and pitch to great effect in his Psycho score. Itis exciting, bleak, shocking and visceral all at once. Bacalov’s Il Postinois Italian film music at its best. It is catchy and addictive in its ability to convey the lifestyles on an isolated Italian island. From the authenticity of spirit of the accordion to the romantic flavour of the strings, Il Postino is a charming and infectious score.

In Jean de Florette, Claude Petit uses music from Verdi’s opera The Force of Destiny, re-arranges it, providing the perfect drama with a poignant theme to underscore the storyline. John Williams defines film music. Referring to Schinder’s List, he said that “even in those years of unspeakable tragedy, there were loving aspects and beautiful aspects of Jewish life.” The haunting and emotive violin solois showcased by ICO Leader, Katherine Hunka. In contrast, Williams mixes wonderment, surprise and danger in his Harry Potter medley.

The Suite from There Will Be Blood by Greenwood is full of emotion as conflicts are played out by a powerful string section which oozes tension and energy! Nino Rota’s The Godfather has one ofcinema’s greatest scores. It is hard to resist the richly cinematic Cinema Paradiso which is among Morricone's most loved scores. Henry Mancini’s iconic Pink Panther music features alongside the captivatingly “I Will Wait for you” from the rather chique Umbrellas of Cherbourg by Michel Legrand.

“The Magic of The Movies” will take you an incredibly nostalgic musical journey, not to be missed in Castlebar, Waterford, Wicklow, Dublin and Sligo. The Irish Chamber Orchestra is resident at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick and is funded by The Arts Council of Ireland/An Chomhairle Ealaíon.
