Garden party and brass band at airfield

On Sunday 12th July, Airfield Estate in Dundrum, Dublin, hosts  'Summer Medley', a day of super fun seasonal activities. Spend some time getting crafty in a workshop, decorate some delicious treats, or be mesmerised by the musical notes of a brass band. All activities are free with admission or membership.

Get into the spirit of a proper garden party with a variety of lawn games; swing a bat at croquet, try your hand at the wellie-toss, or get a team of strongmen together for a mighty contest of Tug of War – moustaches optional! Younger visitors (2-4 years) can enjoy creating colourful little willow hideouts to take shade under, and storyteller Maria will be delving into the fairy tales and nursery rhymes that captured the imagination of the Overend children who originally lived at Airfield Estate.

For music fans a live brass band will delight with their musical renditions as visitors relax on the lawn. Classical Kids will also be performing upbeat numbers that will have youngster’s bopping along and getting involved; they might even get a chance to try their hand at conducting! Who doesn’t love some cake on a sunny day? Decorate your own fairy cake, a scrumptious treat for you and your favourite fairy.

Continuing the fairy theme, Airfield’s smallest garden residents will open their doors for the day to let visitors peek inside their secret little world; follow the fairy trail and you just might be lucky enough to spot some playful fairies, but only the littlest of fans because we all know Mums and Dads can’t see fairies! Beyond the lawn Letitia Overend’s prized 1927 Rolls Royce will be taken out of the garage for the day – why not sit behind the wheel for a photo or chat with resident car mechanic Reg.

The Federation of Irish Beekeepers will also be visiting on the day with a glass beehive, the perfect way to see in and learn some fun facts and tips on beekeeping; they’ll even have some fresh honey from Airfield Estate for tasting. Keeping the buzz going, the Kitchen Garden and Farm will be busy with planting activities for children (5 – 12 years) and farmer Eamon will be giving talks and tastings of milk from the Jersey herd. For budding artists Caroline Ryan of Print Block will be showing how to print bunting inspired by the flowers and foliage from the gardens. Design your own flag to take home, a colourful addition to any garden.

Airfield Estate admission charges are €10 for adults, €5 for children, with children under 3 yrs entering for free. Family rates are available. Airfield Estate annual membership and gift cards are also available.
