Summer solstice events in navan and tara

This year’s array of cultural activities celebrating the summer solstice will mainly take place within the Solstice Arts Centre building with the exception of Eamonn Cagney and Niwel Tsumbu. Ireland’s foremost intercultural duo will fill Tara Church with pulsing rhythmic sounds on Wednesday 17th June at 8pm. Eammon’s blistering solo djembe (percussion) and Niwel Tsumbu’s virtuoso guitar abilities draw both on Congolese roots and modern influences. This fitting venue with limited capacity will create an intimate gig to be remembered.

Back onsite, in the Solstice auditorium, New Orleans jazz quintet, The Session, bring with their contemporary take on the New Orleans sound whilst staying true to the rich tradition of the city. Don’t miss these extremely talented young guys on Friday 19th June at 8pm. Described by Rolling Stone Magazine as “Hot and sharp”.

The Summer Solstice Celebrations will come to a climax on Saturday 20th with workshops, a free family film, an exhibition opening and some drama. For children aged 8 – 13 years there is a Brick Flicks workshop at 11am (sold out) and again at 2pm. Experienced Tutors will share tips and techniques on set building, filming, editing and creating soundscapes. Children will get to create a forest set and bring their favourite Lego characters to life. Tickets are €8 but places are limited. For laugh-a-minute gags there is a FREE screening of The Lego Movie. The whole family are welcome to this colourful family film at 11.30 am. Then at 2.30pm the Gallery will be abuzz with Surveyors Exhibition Opening. The annual exhibition of contemporary visual arts practice in Co. Meath.

A highlight of the weekend will be Charolais, a surreal comedy of love, longing and intense rivalry with a Charolais Heifer. This hilarious and uplifting show is about one woman’s fight for her farmer boyfriend’sattention, while having to share the limelight with his prying mother and his prizedheifer. The ideal Father’s Day gift on Sat 20th or Sun 21st June at 8pm. Tickets €15/€13.
