Medieval Fair in midlands

Athlone Castle is going medieval this July. Take a step back in time on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th July for a fun-filled Medieval Fair at Athlone Castle Visitor Centre in association with the Society for Medieval Anachronism.


Carmel Duffy, Manager of Athlone Arts & Tourism says that “there is a variety of activities planned for the weekend that will be appeal to all ages including; fencing displays, single and group combat, dancing which will include the ‘Bear and the Bear Brawl’ as well as an exhibition of the 15th century Italian dance the Petit Riense.”

There will also be an opportunity to hear about the food eaten in Medieval Ireland with samples to taste. The fair will showcase displays of medieval banners, books, and jewelry and visitors can try their hand at calligraphy, fiber arts and making their own heraldic shield. All visitors will be encouraged to visit the dress up area and have their photo taken in hats, crowns, and armor. There will be prizes on both days for best dressed Lords and Ladies so come along and storm the castle in your best medieval dress. Face-painting will be available as well (included in admission).


Sue Callaghan of the society says that “the Medieval Fair will be an ideal opportunity to experience life in the Middle Ages with the Society for Creative Anachronism. Try some of the crafts, watch a fencing tournament and mingle with the Lords and Ladies of Lough Devnaree.'

In keeping with the medieval theme in JulyAthloneCastle Visitor Centre is delighted to be hosting the Heraldry: Coat of Arms Uncovered exhibition from the National Library of Ireland. This collection introduces the art of heraldry and explores the related themes of identity and citizenship. This temporary exhibition will be on display in the Lower Keep at Athlone Castle Visitor Centre from Saturday 5th July to Monday 4th August.

 

The fair will be hosted over two days at AthloneCastle on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th July. Admission rates are: Family €20, Couples €12, Single €6 and Child €3. This will permit admission to the Medieval Fair and Athlone Castle Visitor Centre for one day. Children under 15 years must be accompanied by an adult.
