Magical children's theatre at Solstice festival

As part of Solstice Festival 2014, Branar Theatre presents Bláth / The Flower at Solstice Arts Centre on Saturday 21 June, 2.30pm and 4.30pm. This stage adaptation of John Light (and illustrator Lisa Evans) children’s book is geared toward audiences aged 7 and upwards.

Set in a world of black and white where plants are no longer exist, a young boy finds a magical book that changes his outlook forever. He sees a flower for the first time and is filled with immediate joy to see such wondrous colour. This awe is bitter-sweet as it makes him sad that there are no flowers where he lives. However, he soon unearths a packet of flower seeds in a junk shop tucked away in the old part of town and learns how to bring flowers to life. As if by magic, this strange world he lives in is transformed.

Bláth is a 40 minute non-verbal show that will enchant audiences as they enter a world made entirely of paper designed by paper artist Maeve Clancy. Combining, puppetry, object theatre and original music score by Colm Mac Con Iomaire (The Frames), Bláth promises to be a show that is at times apprehensive and wistful, but full of amazement. This is a theatre experience that will remain in its audience’s minds forever.

Adapted and directed by Marc Mac Lochlainn, and presented in association with Limerick City of Culture and Roscommon Arts Centre.

This is the first time John Light’s book has been brought to life as a stage adaptation by Branar’s Artistic Director, Marc Mac Lochlainn. The book was originally illustrated by Lisa Evans, but it is Wicklow artist Maeve Clancy, now based on Achill Island, who brings the story to visual life in the play. Maeve is an illustrator, animator and creator of the weekly webcomic Flatmates. She is also working on a forthcoming graphic novel. Colm Mac Con Iomaire is violinist and vocalist with Irish rock group The Frames – this is his first entry into composing music for theatre
