Getting rid of those pesky bed bugs

The words "good night and don't let the Bed bugs bite" have been heard by generations of children as they toddle off to bed, but getting rid of Bed bugs can be real bug bear.

Once those pests find a warm, dark, place to nest they don't want to leave. By day they hide in cracks and crevices in the bed, furniture, skirting boards, and they only come out every few days to feed.

Bed bugs are nocturnal parasitic insects which feed on the blood of humans and other mammals. They don't carry disease, but their bite can cause problems for some people, such as loss of sleep and lack of energy, and children are particularly affected.

A bed bug bite often leaves a hard, whitish swelling, unlike a flea bite which is a dark red spot surrounded by reddened skin.

So how do you get rid of them? If the infestation is bad, the best advice is to use a reputable pest control company who will treat them with insecticidal spray or powder.

You can also buy insecticidal products in supermarkets or chemists, which may keep them at bay.

To maximise the treatment, thoroughly vacuum all floors and upholstery, including the mattress. Remove bed linen and wash at the hottest temperature along with toys or clothing lying around. In other words, keep everything as clean as you can.

Cleanliness is the best way to get rid of Bed bugs, so don't give them the chance to become unwanted guests in your home.
